Recruitment Plan of School of Foreign Studies, XJTU

Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is a key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China as well as one of the oldest universities in China.

The history of XJTU can be traced back to Nanyang College, which was founded in Shanghai in 1896 and renamed Jiaotong University in 1921. In 1956, the main part of Jiaotong University was relocated to Xi'an, Shaanxi Province in accordance with the decision of the State Council. The relocated part was officially renamed Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1959. Over the past scores of years, XJTU has undergone steady development. In the 1990s, it was listed as one of the first batch of “Project 211” and “Project 985” universities. In 2017, it was selected as one of the first batch of “Double First-Class”[1]universities (i.e. first-class universities and first-class disciplines).

The School of Foreign Studies (SFS) of XJTU has its origin in the Department of Western Languages established in 1897. At present, SFS boasts a high-quality faculty of teaching and research in foreign languages and literature, as well as in applied linguistics. They have made achievements in the fields of discourse analysis, second language acquisition and foreign language teaching, fuzzy linguistics, translation studies, ESP, lexicography, foreign literature, etc. In recent years, they have won more than 100 research grants, including those of the National Social Science Fund, of the Shaanxi Social Science Fund, of the XJTU Fund for Humanities and Social Sciences, of the XJTU Incubating Fund for Humanities and Social Sciences, etc. They have published over 200 books, including monographs, translations, textbooks and dictionaries, as well as over 100 papers in world-renowned journals and CSSCI-indexed journals.

In order to enhance its disciplinary strength and to improve its research and teaching performance, SFS is currently inviting high-level talents at home and abroad to join us.

I. Positions and Qualifications

In addition to the basic requirements inTeachers Law of the People’s Republic of Chinaand in the relevant XJTU policies, applicants for all positions below should meet their respective requirements as specified.

1. Research-only postdoctoral fellows

1) Applicants should hold a doctoral degree from a world-class university;

2) They are usually expected to be under the age of 35 (inclusive);

3) They should have necessary research capability and achievements, indicating good potential in academic research. They should meet the following requirement.

·  Publishing, as the first author, one paper in the authoritative journal or two papers in important journals. For applicants who obtained the doctoral degree from a QS-Top-100 or QS-Top-100-by-subject university abroad or who are exceptional in other ways, the requirement for paper publications can be appropriately flexible.

2. New Lecturers

1) Applicants should hold a doctoral degree from a world-class university;

2) They are usually expected to be under the age 35 (inclusive);

3) They should have outstanding academic achievements, indicating good academic potential. They should meet the following requirement.

l Publishing, as the first author, one paper in the SCI/SSCI-indexed journal, or two papers in the CSSCI-indexed journal(s), or (for applicants with the doctoral degree from an overseas university) two papers in the overseas journal(s) equivalent in academic standing to CSSCI-indexed journals, or two books (monographs or translations). For applicants who obtained the doctoral degree from a QS-Top-100 or QS-Top-100-by-subject university or who are exceptional in other ways, the requirement for paper publications can be appropriately flexible.

3. New associate professors

1) Applicants should hold a doctoral degree from a world-class university;

2) They should have a work history of at least two years after obtaining the doctoral degree and a study or work experience of at least 12 consecutive months in a foreign country or a region outside mainland China;

3) They are usually expected to be under the age of 40 (inclusive);

4) They should have outstanding achievements in the related academic field(s), indicating good potential for academic leadership. They should meet the following requirements.

· Heading one national research project, or two ministerial or provincial projects, or projects with total funding of RMB 100,000 yuan. In cases where the requirement for projects is not met, one extra publication in the SCI/SSCI-indexed journal (with the applicant as the first author) is required;

·  Publishing a number of papers as the first author, including one in the SCI/SSCI-indexed journal or two in authoritative journals, and three in CSSCI-indexed journals. One of the two publications in the authoritative journals can be substituted by one monograph or textbook published by one of the top 100 publishers in China with the applicant as the person-in-charge;

·  Winning, as one of the major participants (top 6), one first prize of the national research and teaching award or of the University Scientific Research Award by the Ministry of Education (humanities and social sciences); or winning, as one of the major participants (top 3), one research or teaching award at the ministerial or provincial level or above. In cases where the requirement for awards is not met, one extra publication in the authoritative journal (with the applicant as the first author) is required.

4. Professors

1) Applicants should hold a doctoral degree from a world-class university;

2) They should have a work history of at least two years after obtaining the doctoral degree and a study or work experience of at least 12 consecutive months in a foreign country or a region outside mainland China;

3) They are usually expected to be under the age 40 (inclusive);

4) They should have outstanding achievements in the related academic field(s), indicating good potential for academic leadership. They should meet the following requirements.

· Heading one national research project, or three ministerial or provincial projects, or two ministerial or provincial projects with total funding of RMB 100,000 yuan, or projects with total funding of RMB 200,000 yuan;

·  Publishing a number of papers as the first author, including one in the SCI/SSCI-indexed journal or two in authoritative journals, and five in important journals. One of the two publications in important journals can be substituted by a monograph or textbook or translation published by one of the top 100 publishers in China with the applicant as the person-in-charge;

·  Winning, as one of the major participants (top 4), one first prize of the national research and teaching award or of the University Scientific Research Award by the Ministry of Education (humanities and social sciences); or winning, as one of the major participants (top 2), one first prize of the ministerial or provincial research and teaching award or one second prize of the University Scientific Research Award by the Ministry of Education (humanities and social sciences); or winning, as the person in charge, one second prize of the ministerial and provincial research and teaching award or one third prize of the University Scientific Research Award by the Ministry of Education (humanities and social sciences). In cases where the requirement for awards is not met, one extra publication in the SCI/SSCI-indexed journal or three extra publications in authoritative journals (with the applicant as the first writer) should be required.

5. Top-notch young talents

1) Applicants for this position should hold a doctoral degree;

2) They are usually expected to be under the age of 40 (inclusive). The age limit can be extended to 45 for exceptional applicants;

3) They obey the laws and regulations of the State and of XJTU. They demonstrate academic capability and rigor as well as moral integrity;

4) They possess broad academic vision and innovative power, with good potential for academic leadership in the related field(s);

5) They have outstanding academic achievements in the related field(s), which is highly recognized in the academic circle.

II Remuneration, Responsibilities and Promotion

1. Research-only postdoctoral fellows

1) Remuneration package

·  The base salary is RMB 120,000 yuan per year.

·  An annual living subsidy is provided by the Shaanxi Province, being RMB 30,000 yuan and RMB 60,000 yuan respectively for those holding a doctoral degree from a domestic and from overseas university, for a maximum of two years;

·  An annual living subsidy of no less than RMB 10,000 yuan is granted by the research team or the academic advisor, based on the postdoctoral fellow’s work performance and research output, a;

·  XJTU provides social insurance and housing provident funds in accordance with the relevant policies of the State and of XJTU.

·  Postdoctoral fellows are entitled to XJTU apartments at preferential rent and their children are entitled to XJTU educational resources, including its affiliated kindergarten, primary school and secondary school.

2) Promotion policy

·  Upon completing their postdoctoral fellowship, those who meet the relevant promotion requirements can apply for the position of associate research fellow or associate professor;

·  Postdoctoral fellows with outstanding achievements can apply for the talent-recruitment programs at the national, ministerial and provincial, and university level and those selected can join XJTU as a faculty member.

3) Duties and responsibilities

·  To head one ministerial and provincial project. It can be substituted by one extra publication in the SCI/SSCI-indexed journal or by two extra publications in CSSCI-indexed journals, as the first author;

·  To publish, as the first author, one paper in the SCI/SSCI-indexed journal, or one paper in the authoritative journal in the related field, or two papers in the CSSCI-indexed journal(s);

·  To undertake other work delegated by the university or the SFS.

2. New Lecturers

1) Remuneration package

·  The annual salary is no less than RMB 160,000 yuan;

·  A startup research fund of RMB 40,000 yuan and a settling-in allowance of RMB 30,000 yuan are provided;

·  XJTU provides social insurance and housing provident funds in accordance with the relevant policies of the State and of XJTU;

·  New lecturers are entitled to XJTU apartments at preferential rent and their children are entitled to XJTU educational resources, including its affiliated kindergarten, primary school and secondary school.

2) Promotion policy

·  XJTU signs the probation employment contract with prospective new lecturers. At the end of the employment term, new lecturers are evaluated: those who meet the relevant requirements are promoted to the position of associate professor; those who fail shall be refused for further employment. The afore-mentioned associate professors are qualified to apply for tenure once they pass the evaluation for their first employment term.

3) Duties and Responsibilities

·  To conduct one course, to complete an annual teaching load of 32 hours with good feedback and to participate in one project of teaching reform, textbook development or course construction;

· To head one ministerial and provincial research project;

·  To publish, as the first author, one paper in the SCI/SSCI-indexed journal or four papers in the CSSCI-indexed journal(s). One of the four publications in the CSSCI-indexed journal(s) can be substituted by a monograph published by one of the top 100 publishers in China with the applicant as the person-in-charge.

3. Associate Professor

1) XJTU signs the employment contract with prospective associate professors on a three-year basis. Associate professors are granted tenure on the condition that they get Excellence in the evaluation for their employment term.

2) The annual salary is RMB 220,000 yuan;

3) A settling-in allowance of RMB 60,000 yuan and a start-up research fund of RMB 60,000-150,000 yuan are provided;

4) Associate professors are entitled to XJTU apartments at preferential rent or to a monthly apartment renting allowance. Their children are entitled to XJTU educational resources, including its affiliated kindergarten, primary school and secondary school.

4. Professors

1) XJTU signs the tenure contract with prospective professors;

2) A settling-in allowance of RMB 70,000-120,000 yuan and a start-up research fund of RMB 120,000-300,000 yuan are provided;

3) Salary, allowances, welfares and other benefits (including primary and secondary education resources available to children) are provided in accordance with the relevant policies of the State and of XJTU;

4) Professors are entitled to XJTU apartments at preferential rent or to a monthly apartment renting allowance. Their children are entitled to XJTU educational resources, including its affiliated kindergarten, primary school and secondary school.

5. Young top-notch talents

1) XJTU offers young top-notch talents a competitive annual salary, equivalent to that for similar positions abroad. The minimum is RMB 450,000 yuan for Position A and RMB 300,000 yuan for Position B. In the case of special disciplines and talents, the annual salary is negotiated.

2) XJTU provides sufficient research resources and support, including a startup research fund of RMB 500,000 to 2,000,000 yuan;

3) All young top-notch talents naturally qualify as master’s and doctorate advisors. Special quotas for recruiting postgraduate students are provided.

4) Children of young top-notch talents are entitled to XJTU educational resources, including its affiliated kindergarten, primary school and secondary school.

5) A settling-in allowance of RMB 350,000 yuan is provided and an apartment is available for rent or for purchase.
